A tough match played on 3G. Firwood have been an enigma for WAFC this season and made it tough every time we've played them. We dominated the first 20 mins, reducing Firwood to long balls, and scored after about 10mins from a penalty that Dec Cadman won (when pushed in the back jumping for a ball) and scored by Kenny Rushton. Firwood equalised when their striker ran the channel and cut inside 2 of our back 4 and unleashed a superb strike in off the far post from 25 yards and at an angle. 1-1 was probably fair at half time as clear chances were at a premium. Firwood took the lead through a contested penalty early in the 2nd half but WAFC equalised around 65 mins with a scrap ending with a headed goal for our diminutive winger Dec Cadman. With 5mins to go a quality ball from Kenny Rushton went in at the far post (over a scrum of players) and WAFC were essentially 5 mins from almost certainly guaranteeing 1st Div football next season, but when we lost possession wth one of our wingers I then lunged in not once but twice in a vain attempt to recover the ball and this lead to Firwood shifting the ball quickly into the right wing channel and cutting in to strike a lovely 20 yard ball into the bottom right hand corner. While we are disappointed not to win, 3-3 is not an unfair reflection on a real battle of a game that no team truly dominated enough to claim they were worth all 3 points. All the best to Steve and his lads at Firwood for the rest of the season.
