Like last week, we came off the pitch hugely disappointed having again conceded a winning position in the second half to lose by a single goal. This time we were 3-1 ahead in the second half, but this time we can't really say we should have been further ahead. The match was close, perhaps we were fortunate to be 3-1 ahead, but even though Vinelife were always a threat I thought it looked like we would manage to maintain the lead......certainly not concede 3 goals in the last quarter of the match!
I think the turning point was when in the second half two of our players clashed heads in defence, both had to come off. Whilst centre mid Steve came back on 10 minutes later, I think it was significant that right back Paul could not come back on - this changed our defence and attack because of the re-shuffle that we had to do. Vinelife got a penalty (some of our players thought it was dubious), then equalised almost immediately from our kick-off as we weren't concentrating, and then their best player scored the winner with a great run and shot. We strived for an equaliser but Vinelife hung on. No doubt, Vinelife are a good team, and top of SMCCFL Div 1......it will be interesting to see if they can stay there !
So, one win and two defeats. I reckon we can say we could (but not necessarily should) have won all three. So, again we can't be too disappointed, as we have shown we will be competitive in Div 1. Maybe the goals conceded are no surprise - our keeper last season has gone to uni, our expected new keeper has been a no-show for both the last two matches, whilst we haven't had any of our regular centre backs able to play so far (one of them has had to play in goal twice !). But apart from that, we're a better team than last season, if we can find a keeper and players come back from injury I think we'll improve further.
