Fourth time in a year that we have faced each other and each time the match and result has shown there is nothing between us. Kay Street will be disappointed to lose the Trophy semi final against Hurdsfield today and last season, but I am sure they will get a future chance to play in an SMCCFL Final - we had 4 or possibly 5 semi-final defeats before we reached our first final last season.
Hurdsfield had to work really hard and defend solidly all match to earn this win, especially against the long throw tactic that Kay Street used throughout the match. The long throw can be so dangerous but we defended it well throughout the match and our keeper came the rescue several times. We took the lead in the first half from a header that bounced down off the bar which the ref said must have crossed the line because the ball 'ruffled' the net before the keeper grabbed it - those watching near me agreed, but Kay Street were not convinced. I reckon that on another day it could have been something like 3-2 at half time as both teams missed chances, but we went to the break at just 1-0. In the second half Kay Street had plenty of attacking possession without really threatening to score, but we always carried a scoring threat. I was a bit surprised that Kay Street kept going with the long throw tactic as we were defending it so well and I have not seen them use it before, in hindsight perhaps they should have played their usual attacking style ? Hurdsfield soaked up the pressure from Kay Street well and then near the end one of our counter attacks led to the second goal to seal the win.
The match was played with a good attitude from both sets of players.
Ivy v Hurdsfield final on 9th May.
