This was a good game of football between two closely matched teams. But for Hurdsfield it feels like a missed opportunity to get the win that we really needed to have any chance of avoiding relegation. And I think it would be fair to say that it would have been a win that we would have deserved - I reckon we had the greater number of scoring chances than Ramsbottom but could only take two of them.
Ramsbottom scored first within the first few minutes after a defensive error gifted them the the opportunity, although they almost didn't take it. Then not long after they should have scored a second following a bit of defender/keeper mix-up from a long punt forward, but the ball fell into the keeper's hands off the post. We came back into it and should have scored more before half time than the equaliser we did get. In the second half we took the lead only for Ramsbottom to equalise from a great free kick into the top corner. Both teams pushed for a winner in the last quarter of the match but it ended 2-2.
That is five matches in a row unbeaten for Hurdsfield and we have definitely turned things around with better player availability and some very good performances. We had a strong team today, but we didn't play as well as our recent matches. However, despite the improvement, the 5 match run has included 3 league draws when we have really needed wins - 6 points from 12 has not been enough following our poor season up to then with only 1 win. Before today's match I reckoned we probably needed 3 wins from the last 3 league matches (even though one of those is against Burnley Yellows).......with this draw it is probably beyond us now, but we'll keep playing, keep enjoying our football and you never know ! We'll enjoy our SMCCFL football whichever division we are in next season.
