The match was brought forward from 15th Dec, because Salford need to play their rearranged NCT fixture next Saturday. We switched this to Macclesfield because the Salford council pitches were all closed. It was a good decision to get the match played, but thank you to the Salford players for travelling to us for a second time this season. The pitch was a bit crusty/frosty on the surface but took a stud and it softened as the match progressed with the winter sun (except one goalmouth which was in shade).
I reckon both teams were guilty of some poor defending to concede soft goals which was one reason for the high score. Also, both teams were guilty of missing some apparently simple goal scoring chances. But the the other reason for 8 goals was some decent football played by both teams on a bobbly pitch.
Salford went ahead 3 times, for Hurdsfield to equalise each time. Then we took the lead to go 4-3 very soon after the third equaliser and it looked like we might hold on, but Salford equalised in the last 5 minutes. It was 2-2 at half time.
That is two draws between these two teams this season, showing just how closely matched we are. You wouldn't have said that last season after Salford won both matches, so we can be pleased with that improvement. Actually, we have come off the pitch after both draws feeling like we could and perhaps should have won.
And I think in both matches both teams have also matched each other for playing football the 'SMCCFL way'.
