Nice clear morning, pitch is reasonable shape and we were pleased to thank our new sponsors at the start of the game for generously supporting our club.
We started the game reasonably lively but almost went behind after a mix up at the back put the Kay Street striker clean through, thankfully our keeper was on hand and made the save. We took the lead about 15 minutes into the first half with a goal from Jonny Falder. Kay Street came into the game more after the goal and began working the ball well down the right but we were able to add a second, the Kay street right back got caught in possession and the ball broke kindly for me, I cut into the box and squared it for Jonny F to add his second.
As the half wore on Kay Street's pressure paid off, a back pass to our keeper was controlled but as our keeper tried to pass back out to the defender the Kay Street forward had closed down the space and cut out the pass before scoring. Kay Street were again using the right flank well and we had to defend a couple of corners. The 3rd goal was the best of the match, we won the ball in midfield, Dave Slater took the ball on his chest and it cut across the John Wright who has a habit of hitting the back of the net from 35 yards. Outside of the boot on the volley right into the corner, keeper had no chance.
Kay street came back at us again, this time down the left, a jinked run into box, our centre back had slid in to put the ball out for a corner but it had got stuck under feet and whilst lay on the ground the ball rolled to his arm, my personal opinion was that he couldn't get out of the way so not handball and our left back picked up a booking for arguing this point. Penalty well taken and scored, half time whistle blew no time for a restart. 3-2 half time.
I spoke to Tony at half time and he explained there had been a clip on the heels of the forward by our right back before the incident and he had let play continue initially as the forward had stayed on his feet but gained no advantage so handball or the foul was reason enough for the penalty, the good thing about Tony as a ref as he is willing to engage with players to clarify decisions and we accepted this and picked our heads up for the second half.
We came out sharply in the second half, not wanting to give KSB a chance to get back level and we added a 4th, corner swung into the box was only half cleared and it sat up nicely at my feet, I put my boot through it and it found the net.
We created a few good chances and had a couple of 1 on 1 chances that the KSB keeper saved well. At our end we defended well and our keeper was on hand twice from corners punching clear in a crowded penalty area and we closed the game out to get our first points of the season.
KSB are a good team and for spells in the game really worked the ball around well in midfield, number 8 and the shorter lad with dark hair (think he was number 7) linked up nicely. The lad at the back who was captain think he was called Brett had a decent game and the other centre back with the dark hair was excellent too.
Good spirited game and look forward to the away game in Rawtenstall!
