This is always a feisty encounter with my latent connections to SMAFC and big mouth and SMAFC's very aggressive style of play. Add to that the fact that we can't shake each other (as we've progressed from Div 3 to Div 1 in the last 3 seasons) and it makes for an edgy, overly competative encounter more often than not.
After this result it looks like we'll be seeing more of each other as barring a miracle from Firwood, SMAFC will finish the season in the safety of 6th and WAFC will enjoy Europa League football through our 5th place.
The game itself was tightly contested and although we took the lead in the 1st minute through a set piece (Tom B heading in) it was soon 1-1 when their No.7 scored from a tight angle when an inswinging free kick came in to a mass of players.
We then scored 3 without reply (Tom B from a corner, Tim H after some beautiful left sided inter-changes and Tails from a lightning counter attack) but weren't necessarily 3 goals better at half time.
SMAFC quickly replied after half time with a good strike from 20 yards when the sub (No. 16) was allowed to roam too far across the top of our box.
When Luke unluckily sliced into his own net off a driven SMAFC free kick, with 15 mins to go, the game was once again up for grabs. Throw in a glorious chance spurned by Tom B for a hat-trick and a couple of crossbar blows from SMAFC and you can see how this game was on a knife edge.
But Tim Hall produced a wonderful solo effort in the last minute to win the game and secure all 3 points and leap frog us over SMAFC and out of reach of relegation.
Looks like we'll do it all again next year...oh no
