Congratulations to Westwood for getting through to their second Trophy final in a row. Maybe this time they will go one better in the final.
For us (Hurdsfield) this was yet another semi-final frustration......our fifth SMCCFL semi final and not once have we been successful to get to the final.
We definitely did not go into this match thinking we were favourites based on the Div 3 v Div 1 status........Westwood had the home advantage of 3G pitch and we knew they had beaten div 1 Firwood in the previous round. But we were confident after a decent performance (but loss) against Yellows the week before and a team just two short of our strongest.
I reckon it is fair to say that we probably would have won this if both our strikers had not got injured and had to come off, one just before half time and one just after half time. We did have subs, but not regular outfield players, and the loss of two key players when the match was in the balance was the crucial difference in Westwood winning I reckon. Up to that point, although the match was tight and Westwood went 1-0 and then 2-1 ahead, I reckon we had the majority of the attacking play and goal chances.
Headed goals from corners made it 1-1 in the first half. Then we had a great chance to go 2-1 up but the keeper saved, shortly after Westwood scored a second and it was 2-1 at half time. Even though striker Dave had already come off injured, at half time we were still confident of turning the match round. But that went when striker Fran had to come off early in the second half with a nasty ankle injury from a bad Westwood challenge (we didn't get a penalty !). It wasn't long before Westwood made it 4-1 and the match was won for them.
Another semi final disappointment for us. But pleased for Michael and his Westwood team and the final v Ivy Cosmos should be a good one. And if Westwood bring even just half as many noisy supporters to the final as they had at last year's final it will make for another 'fun atmosphere' for the final.
